　　在《吸血鬼德古拉》小說原作者布萊姆·斯托克筆下的一章“船長日志”中，“得墨忒爾”是把德古拉從特蘭西瓦尼亞運到倫敦的船的名字——這艘俄國帆船運送著50個沒有標記的大木箱出發(fā)，而此后在英國海岸線上擱淺，破破爛爛，全船僅存一個瘋癲的幸存者。本片的故事將詳細聚焦得墨忒耳號的那趟可怕旅程：某神秘的乘客把船員們一個接一個屠殺。

 本片是同一故事第三度重拍的版本。此片將好萊塢的背景改成今日的搖滾樂壇，男主角原是著名的搖滾樂歌手，而女主角則在小型夜總會賣藝。影片中有不少熱門插曲，部分片段的鏡頭和表演都不俗，但整體則顯得有點矯揉造作，角色欠缺真正的生命感，不過娛樂性還是維持相當水準。本片曾獲奧斯卡最佳電影插曲金像獎。
